Doves: Kingdom Of Rust

Doves: Kingdom Of Rust

This Monday marks the European release of The Doves latest album “Kingdom Of Rust.” I’m very excited about the prospects of this album. It took forever to record and release but so did Lost Cities and it turned out to be my favourite Doves album yet.

The single, Jetstream, has been on repeat a fair bit for the past couple of weeks (by the way, it sounds amazing on my Beats). I’ve almost made the wife (an O.G. Doves fan who turned me onto them many moons ago) sick of the song (sorry Cheryl) so hurry up and get this bad boy released in North America.

See you in June, Doves.

A Primitive Evolution

Saw my friend Stu’s band A.P.E. play on Friday night at The Reverb.

This is a band to watch out for in 2009. It’s a sound I haven’t heard in a while. Check out A.P.E. here.

10 Years Since Clarity

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Jimmy Eat World: Clarity

It’s too bad that I don’t live on one of the stops for Jimmy Eat World’s current Clarity X 10 Tour. “Clarity” easily ranks in my top 10 albums of all time. The flow, Mark Trombino’s production skills and Goodbye Sky Harbour make this album a classic for me.

With the 10 year release anniversary for “Clarity” fast approaching I find myself reflecting on a few things. Firstly, I think about the amazing show I witnessed in Buffalo at The Showplace Theatre back in March (the 19th I believe), 1999 where I saw Sense Field and Jimmy Eat World play back to back. Secondly, I think about how old I’m starting to get. Thirdly, Showplace Theatre shows make me think about the Mighty Taco up the street and how tasty Mighty Taco is.

Check out “Goodbye Sky Harbour” from this show (Thanks for letting me relive the past Lake Erie Monster!):

Holy crap. Those were some good times. “Goodbye Sky Harbour” live always makes me head bang because Jimmy Eat World play it so hard.

Phoenix’s “1901″

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Phoenix 1901

Hey Phoenix. Nice of you guys to resurface again (wow, bad unintentional joke).

Your new song “1901″ is blowing my mind. Seriously, it is making me go crazy (not psycho crazy, but happy crazy). Especially since I am listening to it on my new Beats By Dre headphones (thanks Neil). It’s like Monster Energy/Red Bull for my ears.

Just wanted to say that I’m eagerly anticipating May 25th, 2009. Based on listening to “1901″ over and over for the past hour,“Wofgang Amadeus Phoenix” sounds like it’s going to be an amazing album (I know it’s bad to judge but you guys never write bad songs). Your last album “It’s Never Been Like That” was your best album yet and “1901″ tells me that you still know how to write hits (that’s me doing band manager industry speak!) and that “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” will get 10 stars from Pitchfork Media and every other music industry buzz blog (If it means anything, I’ll probably give it a 10 out of 10 when I review it for my imaginary music blog).

Again, I shouldn’t jump to conclusions. But, based on your history I can’t think of any other conclusion for the new album. If I go and plot your release history using an imaginary mental graph and rate the amazingness that comes with each new album, it’s pretty easy for me or any music industry pundit to extrapolate from that graph that the new album will set a new plateau and destroy every all previous Phoenix releases. “1901″ sounds like a perfect fusion of the stripped down “It’s Never Been Like That” and the uniquely International French Fusion Sound (I might call copyright on this new musical genre I just invented) that I couldn’t get enough of with “United.” Here’s a side question. Why is it that French bands (Yourselves, Air, Daft Punk, Sebastien Tellier, Justice, Tahiti 80 and so on) can so effortlessly combine all sorts of musical influences so easily? It’s like France is the centre point for all musical influences from around the world.

Anyway, I’ve got to stop writing. “1901″ is playing over and over and I dread I will listen to it all day and then wreck the album when it’s finally released.

So, before I go, here’s my request. Please come back to Canada for the album’s promotional tour (just make sure you play Funky Squaredance when you come back and do that awesome improv thing you do when you play it live). Maybe try to bring Air with you or something (it would be like some awesome old school reunion). And tell Daft Punk to come back too. It’s been a while. They could be your special, secret guest or something. Cool?

Thanks guys.

ELO: “Out Of The Blue”

Electric Light Orchestra: Out Of The Blue

As a kid, ELO was one of my favourite bands. Although, I can’t exactly place my finger on what it was I liked the most about them. Maybe it was the fact that my parents listened to them, the combination of classical and modern compositions to produce a grandiose sound or just the amazing artwork that accompanied albums like Out Of The Blue.

Over the last year I’ve gotten back into Electric Light Orchestra and all things Jeff Lynne big time. Of the ELO catalogue, I’ve been spending a great deal of time listening to “New World Record,” “Out Of The Blue,” and the recently released “Zoom.” These days, much like when I was a kid, I’m into the wonderful, harmonised vocals, warm acoustics, great artwork, progressive song structures and arguably some of the best use of “strings (I’m always a sucker for the timely use of strings)” in contemporary rock.

In My Youth…

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Long ago, I used to be young.

And when I was young I listened to a band called Tad.

Stuck in my head today is the baseline from Tad’s “Greasebox.”

Had Tad been a little better looking I think these guys could have easily been bigger than Nirvana.
